New Delhi, 17 Oct 2015: Calling for strong actions against the “motormouths” in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sangh Parivar, who have been making “nonsense” statements over the deadly Dadri lynching of 28 September, BJP’s key ally Shiromani Akali Dal called the incident a “shame for the nation.”

Akali Dal leader Naresh Gujral said today, “It (Dadri) should be condemned in the strongest possible words. What has happened thereafter is something which is damaging the NDA (National Democratic Alliance led by BJP, of which Akali Dal is a key ally), the BJP and which is damaging the Prime Minister more than anybody else – because some people who are holding responsible jobs are talking very irresponsibly.”

Taking jibes straightly at BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and hinting at Haryana Chief Minister M.L. Khattar’s controversial 15 October remark against Muslims, the Akali leader said, “Ministers, chief ministers, fringe in the Sangh Parivar, all of them. From time to time, warnings have been issued. But unfortunately no action has been taken against anybody.” Gujral was talking to NDTV today over the Dadri incident and the events that followed.

Responding to a query if Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling the Dadri lynching “sad” is enough, Gujral said the Prime Minister had spoken earlier also, but clearly “these motormouths” are not paying heed enough to what he has said.”

“I think it’s high time now some action is taken against anybody, so that a strong message goes all the way to the Sangh Parivar that this kind of nonsense will not be tolerated,” added the Akali Dal, sending a strong message to its ally BJP.

In Dadri near the national capital Delhi, 50-year-old Akhlaq Ahmed was lynched by a mob on 28 September, acting on a rumor that Akhlaq and his family ate beef. Following the incident, a number of BJP leaders, including union Minister Mahesh Sharma, Bihar BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi and Haryana CM Khattar, made controversial barbs one after another against the minority Muslim community over the slaughter of the cow, an animal considered sacred by the majority population of the country.

With Gujral taking a strong jibe against the lynching and the following barbs, Akali Dal is the first among BJP allies who have taken a stand against the ruling party led by PM Modi over the politics of cow.
