2nd Phase of UP Elections: 39% candidates’ educational qualification is between 5th and 12th class

Lucknow, Feb 12: Money matters more than education – in elections everywhere, more so in India. Out of 721 candidates in the fray for 67 Assembly seats, there are only 112 post-graduates while 277 (39% of the total number of candidates) have educational qualification between 5th and 12th class. But there are 256 (36%) crorepati (millionaire) candidates contesting the polls due on 15th Feb. among the candidates, there are 108 graduates and 84 graduate professionals, an analysis conducted by Association For Democratic Reforms (ADR) revealed.

While 93 candidates have declared themselves to be just literates, 11 candidates have declared to be illiterate.

Almost similar was the situation in the 1st Phase of Assembly polls held Saturday (11th Feb).

Out of 839 candidates in the 1st Phase, 402 (48%) candidates’ educational qualification was between 5th and 12th Class, while 336 (40%) candidates declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. 64 candidates declared themselves to be just literates and 15 candidates have declared to be illiterate.

However, there were 302 (36%) crorepati candidates among them.
