New Delhi, Feb 12: The All India Majlis-e Ittehadul Muslimeen, popularly known as MIM, on Sunday announced to contest the upcoming municipal elections in the national capital. Delhi state president of MIM, Irfanullah Khan announced that the party will contest in all 272 municipal wards in Delhi.
MIM supremo and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has fielded some candidates also in the ongoing Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
“We will fight the elections on the issues of basic amenities, not on emotional or political issues. Political parties fight these elections also on emotional issues and thus vitiate the political atmosphere,” said Khan while talking to pressmen here.
“We want to take it out of such atmosphere. Our party will fight only on the issues of basic amenities. Our MIM has shown work in Hyderabad, Aurangabad and is doing the same in Telangana also. We will repeat such work here also. People should elect people who really want to serve the society and locality,” said Khan.
MIM has been winning around a dozen Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh for some decades. The party won two assembly seats in Maharashtra last year. Owaisi himself has won Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat thrice. Before him, his later father and renowned orator Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi had represented the seat six times.
Delhi has 272 municipal wards. This past Wednesday, the Delhi State Election Commission notified reservation of wards for scheduled caste (SC) and women candidates. Out of 272 wards, 46 have been reserved for SC candidates and 114 for women candidates. Out of the 46 SC seats, 24 will be reserved for SC women candidates.
The Delhi local body elections will be held in April this year.
