No exit poll before 5:30 PM on 9 March: Election Commission

New Delhi, March 05: The Election Commission of India has extended the prohibitory order for exit polls till 5:30 PM on 9th March. The earlier embargo was for 8th March. The EC has issued fresh order in view of the fresh poll being held in Karnprayag Assembly seat in Uttarakhand and Alapur (SC) Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh on 8th March.

“…hereby notifies the period between 7.00 AM on 04-02-2017 and 5:30 PM on 09-03-2017, as the period during which conducting any exit poll and publishing or publicizing result of any exit poll in connection with the current General Elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh is prohibited,” said the EC in a notification on Saturday.

The polling in these states began on 4th Feb when votes were cast in Goa and Punjab.

The polling is being held in seven phases in UP and two phases in Manipur.

The votes for all five states would be counted on 11th March.

The Hindi daily Dainik Jagran had published an exit poll on its website on 12th Feb, day after the first phase of UP elections. The EC got FIR registered against the daily in 15 districts.
