New Delhi, Aug 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking 4th time from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day, came down heavily on mob violence in the name of faith, with a clear reference to cow vigilantism.

“Violence in the name of ‘Astha’ is not something to be happy about, it will not be accepted in India. India is about Shanti, Ekta and Sadbhavana. Casteism and communalism will not help us,” said the PM.

Delivering his speech in Hindi, PM Modi said: देश शांति, एकता और सद्भावना से चलता है… सबको साथ लेकर चलना हमारी सभ्यता एवं संस्कृति है (Country is run with peace, unity and harmony. To take all along is our civilization and culture.)

While stressing communal harmony and unity, he said: “तब भारत छोड़ो का नारा था… आज भारत जोड़ो का नारा है. ((During freedom movement), our slogan was ‘Quit India’. Now it is ‘United India’.)

He raised several other issues in his speech.

He also condoled the deaths of children at a government hospital in Gorakhpur.
