After President, PM Modi Condemns Haryana Violence, Appeals for Peace

New Delhi, Aug 25: An hour after President Ram Nath Kovind strongly condemned the violence in Haryana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also condemned the violence carried out by supporters of self-styled saint Gurmeet Ram Rahim after his conviction in rape case.

“The instances of violence today are deeply distressing. I strongly condemn the violence & urge everyone to maintain peace,” tweeted Prime Minister, a few minutes back.

He informed that he was monitoring the situation of law and order with National Security Advisor and Home Secretary.

“The law & order situation is being closely monitored. I reviewed the situation with the NSA & Home Secretary,” he said in another tweet.

“Urged officials to work round the clock to restore normalcy and provide all possible assistance that is required.”

In his comment, President Kovind had said: “Violence and damage to public property after court verdict is highly condemnable; appeal to all citizens to maintain peace.”

While official figure of deaths is 13, unconfirmed reports say around 25 epople were killed in the violence after the controversial saint was convicted in a 15-year rape case. As per reports, over 150,000 supporters had gathered in Panchkula in Haryana where a CBI court was to pronounce verdict in the case.

The irate mob also attacked several journalists and set to fire OB vans of TV channels.
