New Delhi/Gorakhpur, Aug 30: It is immensely shocking and painful but it is true that this month of August has claimed life of 290 children at the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical (BRD) College and hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, the parliamentary constituency of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Some 213 of them died in the neonatal ICU (NICU) and 77 in the encephalitis ward, hospital official said.

As reported by Press Trust of India (PTI), Dr P K Singh, the acting principal of BRD hospital, while giving information about the total figure said that 37 children have died in just two days (27th and 28th August) — 26 died in NICU and 11 in encephalitis ward.

Dr Singh also told that since January this year, a total of 1,250 deaths have been reported mainly in the encephalitis, infant and children’s wards.

Earlier this month, CM Adityanath had ordered a high level probe when in the first week of August over 70 children died allegedly due to shortage of liquid oxygen at the hospital.

Dr P K Singh, principal of Rajkiya Medical College, Ambedkar Nagar, was given additional charge of BRD Medical College & hospital by the state government after the removal of Dr Rajeev Mishra, the then principal for his alleged carelessness.

Besides the principal, the state government has removed five more officials including Additional Chief Secretary (Medical Health) Anita Bhatnagar Jain since the probe started.

Despite sacking, suspension and removal of some officials, death toll at the hospital has not stopped.
