New Delhi, Sep 9: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind on Saturday welcomed the Supreme Court directives to states to check mob lynching and violence in the name of cow.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court ordered all states to appoint a senior police officer as the nodal officer in each district to effectively deal with the issue of cow vigilantism.

“This directive is testimony to the fact that the states have failed to deal with the menace of violence and mob-lynching in the name of gauraksha,” said Mohammad Salim Engineer, Secretary General of Jamaat, while addressing a press conference here in the national capital.

“We hope this will now act as a deterrent to those who take law in their own hands as the states will now play a more proactive role in preventing the harassment of its citizens under the guise of cow protection,” he said.

This year alone, at least two dozen people, mostly Muslims, have been killed in mob lynching by gangs of cow vigilantes in different parts of the country, particularly in those states ruled by BJP.
