New Delhi, Oct 16: Today is the World Food Day. The day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October – this day in 1945, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded. Just two days back, the Global Hunger Index Report showed India at 100th position among 119 countries, down 45 positions since 2014.

The day is celebrated by many organisations concerned with food security, but here we are presenting the comments of some ministers and politicians. It is political parties whose policies are largely blamed for the acute poverty in the country.

Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare:
Food production in the world now is sufficient to feed everyone, yet millions of people go hungry. The challenge today is to ensure that a growing population – projected to rise to around 10 billion by 2050 – accompanied by ever increasing migration has enough food to meet their nutritional needs.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Union Minister of Food Processing:
‏Hunger is the greatest curse inflicted on a human being. It’s heart wrenching that millions of people go hungry while so much food gets wasted. This #WorldFoodDay, let us pledge to wage a war against food waste especially on our plates and collectively ensure no one sleeps hungry.

Union Ministry of Health:
This #WorldFoodDay, let’s unite to erase hunger. Let good #health prevail for all. #SwasthaBharat

Ashok Gehlot, General Secretary, Congress and former chief minister of Rajasthan:
Greetings on #WorldFoodDay. This day would become much more meaningful if we pledge to create a Zero #Hunger environment in India. #FoodDay

All India Trinamool Congress, ruling party of West Bengal:

Mamata Banerjee, chief minister, West Bengal
‏Right to Food is a basic human right. In #Bengal we give rice at Rs 2/kg to 8.5 crore people. Best wishes to all #WorldFoodDay
