Rajasthan: Section 144 imposed, internet services suspended as Hindu groups plan rally to support Labourer’s Murderer

New Delhi, Dec 14: In the wake of an announcement made by some Hindu groups for a rally in support of Shambunlal Raigar who brutally murdered a Muslim labourer Police have imposed section 144 (unlawful assembly) and suspended internet services in Udaipur and Rajsamand districts. A man named Updesh Rana who came from Uttar Pradesh to Jaipur to support Raiger has also been arrested.

Issuing a notice, the Udaipur Police stated that it has imposed section 144 as the rally could lead to communal clashes in the region. To maintain the law & order, the police have temporarily suspended telecom services and social media including bulk sms, MMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter services. The internet services are likely to resume after 24 hours. Citizens have also been asked be vigilant and inform Police if they get to know any violation of law.

In a horrific incident, on 6th December, Shambunlal Raigar killed Mohammed Afrazul, 48, a laborer from Malda in West Bengal in Rajasamand district. Raigar’s nephew shoot the video of killing and burning Afrazul. In the horrifying video of the incident, went viral on social media, Shambunlal justifying his act and warning that those indulging in ‘love jihad’ will meet the same fate. Afrazul’s charred body was found nest day. The Police arrested Raigar and filed a case against him.

‘Not in May Name’ Protests in Jaipur, Delhi, Bangalore

The incident shook the nation. Since then several protests have been taken place across the country. On Tuesday (13th Dec) too, protests were held in Jaipur, Delhi and Bangalore.

In Jaipur, this was second big protest demanding justice to the victim family and punishment to the culprit. The joint protest was held by several human rights and socio-religious groups including Peoples’ Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Rajasthan, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangatha (RMKSS), Rajasthan Nagrik Manch (RNM), Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch (DSMM), All India Baudh Mahasabha (AIBM), Jan Vichar Manch (JVM), Dr. Ambedkar Vichar Manch, Nagrik manch, Jamait Islami Hind (JIH), National Federation of Indian Women and All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA).

Alleging that the hate crimes against Muslims are increasing in the state due to the misrule of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and pushing the whole society towards hate, they demanded her resignation. They also demanded to investigate who else was involved in the planning of this killing.

Besides Jaipur, the protest was also organized in Delhi and Bangalore where students, academicians, activists and film makers gave messages of communal harmony.
