New Delhi, April 4: New Delhi’s Ramlila ground on Wednesday witnessed thousands of burqa-clad women carrying play cards against the proposed bill criminalising the instant divorce or triple Talaq. They have also submitted a memorandum to the President of India against the bill.
Women belong to Muslim community are not happy with the government since the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017 was passed by the Lok Sabha in December last year. In this month only, dozens of such protests took place in various parts of the country. These women think that this bill is very problematic for them and it is a direct interference into their religious law which is protected under the Constitutional of India.
“Take back Triple Talaq Bill, Triple Talaq Bill is against Muslim women, Stop interference in our Shariat, We can’t tolerate interference in Muslim personal law, We reject Triple Talaq Bill, Triple Talaq Bill disrupts family and society, Islamic Shariat is our honour,” reads some of the placards.
While addressing the gathering, Atiya Siddiqua, member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), said that Islam has provided complete code of conduct and Muslim women don’t need any such law from the government.
“We the Muslim women are very well protected under our Islamic Shariat Law, compared to other developing family & social laws,” she said.
“We are comfortable with our Muslim Personal Law, we do not need any alteration in it, under any circumstances, especially when intensions are bad,” she added.
Dr. Asma Zehra, executive member of AIMPLB, highlighted a number of defects in the bill. She said that the bill was passed in haste in Lok Sabha bypassing the established parliamentary practices and Rules of Procedure of the Lok Sabha.
Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umri, president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and vice president of AIMPLB and Maulana Talib Rahmani also addressed the gathering. Many community leaders including Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi were present there.
