New Delhi, April 18: Religious leaders from Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism and Sikhism on Tuesday expressed their concern over growing incidents of rape and crimes against women and demanded the highest punishment to guilty people.

Addressing a press conference cum public gathering at the Press Club of India in New Delhi, they have said that rising number of rape cases is very disturbing and it is shameful that all are happening under the government that claims to be a vanguard of the girl child.

“We feel that sanctity of life is paramount and those guilty of violating this sanctity must be awarded the highest punishment through the due process of law. If the guilty go unpunished as has been the trend in the recent past then people will start losing faith in the supremacy of law and it will embolden the lumpen and anti-social elements of society to commit more crimes,” a joint declaration signed by leaders reads.

Presiding over the meeting Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maulana Nusrat Ali demanded that justice should be fast-tracked.

“Action should be taken against those who try to shield the guilty and prevent the law from taking its course. Justice should not be delayed and fast track courts should be formed. The moral depravity that is setting in society needs to be curtailed by imposing controls on those trying to spread vulgarity and indecency through various means,” Ali said.

“It is a cause of grave concern that parents have become apprehensive about the safety and security of their daughters. It is the duty of law enforcement agencies and lawmakers to ensure the security of its citizens. But it seems they are not discharging their duties honestly,” he added.

Giani Ranjit Singh Head Priest Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Father M.D Thomas Founder / Director Institute of Harmony and Peace Studies New Delhi, Swami Saumiyanand, Ved Pracharak Arya Samaj, Maulana Jinan Asghar Secretary Majlis-e-Ulema, Delhi, Sister Manju of Brahma Kumaris Vivek Muni of Jainism and Engineer Muhammed Salim of JIH participated in the programme.
