New Delhi, 4 May 2018: Demanding strict action against the culprits of Wednesday attack in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), students said that those who tried to attack former Vice President of India Mr Hamid Ansari and students were terrorists.

In a press conference in New Delhi on Friday they also demanded a judicial probe, suspension of guilty police officials and an apology from the government.

Zuhaib Ahmad, a cabinet member of Aligarh Muslim Students Union (AMUSU) said that attackers came to target Ex Vice President of India Hamid Ansari.

“The only aim of these terrorists was to attack on Hamid Ansari. Some of the attackers was caught by students and handed over to police but police let them go,” Ahmad said.

He said “Jinnah is our history not our faith”.

Mateen Ashraf, another cabinet member AMUSU said that the attackers were not goons but terrorists.

“They came in police protection and Mr. Hamid Ansari was their target and they were armed with pistols and sticks and reached very close to Mr. Ansari,” Ashraf said.

He said that police initiated lathi charge on students without any order and hit students on their heads and necks.

“Indeed, it wasn’t a lathi charge but it was a deadly attack,” Ashraf recalled.

“We will fight. We need support from peace-loving organisations and classes will be suspended unless our demands are met,” he added.

According to Ashraf, it is an attack that started from University of Hyderabad when Rohit Vemula was forced to commit suicide. Then it came to Jawaharlal Nehru University where Najeeb was forced to disappear and now it is AMU’s turn.

“AMU is united and we need actions against guilty persons,”

Najamussaqib, another cabinet member of AMUSU said that the attackers came in police protection and police dropped them at their homes.

Former president of AMUSU Abdullah Azzam said that these people can’t tolerate any dissent and since Mr. Ansari has criticized the establishment on the situation of Muslims in the country, they are after him.

“They don’t like academic institutions because Dalit, Backwards and Muslims should not get education and raise voices for their rights,” Azzam pointed out.

“These people were seeking apology from Britishers and now trying to prove their patriotism,”

He said that the Aligarh MP Satish Gautam is also AMU court member, but he never raised any questions during the meeting.

AMU court is the highest decision making body in the campus.

Azzam also raised question on police attack.

“They can only abuse but can’t argue and we are not much concerned about their attack because the only thing they can do is to attack people. But the most problematic things is the deadly attack by police,” he argued.

“When police become criminal and state is criminalized then it is very problematic and it raises frustration among people,” he pointed out.

The press conference was organized by Students Islamic Organisation of India.
