New Delhi, May 5: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind on Saturday expressed concern over the current status of Indian judiciary and said that people’s faith in the judiciary is being undermined and the whole country is concerned about it.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, JIH general secretary Mohammad Salim Engineer also raised the issue of Justice Loya and government’s antagonistic attitude towards the appointment of judges by the collegium.

“For the common people, the judiciary is the last resort in this country and if one does not get justice even from here then its credibility will get lost,” Salim pointed out.

“Attempts by the government to block the natural ascent of judges to the Supreme Court who have a reputation of being “independent” minded and not prone to succumb to political pressure are a cause of concern,” a press statement from JIH reads.

“Judiciary is one of the most critical arms of our democracy and any weakening therein will only strengthen autocracy,” it added.

Salim welcomed government ordinance awarding capital punishment to rapists of girls below the age of 12 years and said that deciding punishment on the basis of age will complicate the issue further.

Stressing to focus on reasons behind the rising number of heinous crimes such as rape, he advised the government to ban alcohol completely and shutdown pornographic web sites.

He said that all such criminals should be given death penalty but the examination of witnesses and evidences should be done in a better way so that no innocent is punished and criminals are not spared.
