New Delhi, June 8: The Delhi University on Friday urged the striking teachers to come back to work and start evaluating exam sheets in interest of the students.

In a meeting conducted on Friday, several deans and college principals expressed “serious concern” at the strike, fearing that this may lead to delay in declaration of results of thousands of under-graduate students.

“… it is appealed to all teachers concerned, in the larger interest of the career of students, to immediately join the process of evaluation work at their respective evaluation centres and evaluate answer-scripts,” the varsity said in a statement.

Hundreds of Delhi University teachers are on strike since last month to demand that ad hoc teachers be made permanent and colleges not be not allowed to go ‘autonomous’ – as offered under a scheme by the Human Resource Development Ministry.

Teachers are opposing autonomy, saying that this will provide a pretext to increase fees and make higher education out of bounds for poor students.
