New Delhi, April 30— Could be, couldn’t be. This all depends on how Congress president Rahul Gandhi takes this notice issued from the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has more than once proved his expertise in successfully turning even a minor negative remark on him in his favour.

With around 170 Lok Sabha seats yet to go to poll in the remaining three phases of the General Elections, the central government of PM Modi on Tuesday issued a notice to Rahul seeking his explanation on a complaint by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy that alleged he is a British citizen.

The government has given Rahul a fortnight to explain his “factual position” over the complaint.

“I am directed to say that this ministry has received a representation from Dr Subramanian Swamy, in which it has been brought out that a company named Backops Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9EH and that you were one of the directors and secretary of the said company,” says the letter from the Home Ministry.

The letter also says: “It has been further brought out in the complaint that in the company’s annual returns filed on October 10, 2005 and 31 October, 2006, your date of birth has been given as June 19, 1970 and that you had declared your nationality as British.”

Ironically, the Modi government issued the notice on a day when the Supreme Court is set to hear Congress plea that Election Commission is not acting on complaints against PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.

The government notice has not only put Rahul’s citizenship at test but also his political wisdom.
