NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 30— The Supreme Court of India on Monday directed the Gujarat government to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh as well as a job and accommodation to gangrape survivour Bilkis Bano of Gujarat within two weeks.

The top court had passed the same order in April this year. The state government did not implement the order, rather filed a plea in the SC to reconsider its decision. The top court on Monday turned down the plea and reiterated the same order.

The state government has reportedly undertaken before the Supreme Court on Monday to execute the order within two weeks.

The SC had on April 23, 2019 directed the Gujarat government to pay Rs 50 lakh in compensation and provide a government job to Bilkis who was gang raped during Gujarat riots of 2002.

Bilkis Bano was 21 years old at the time of the incident. Along with several members of her family, her three-year-old child was also killed in riots.

A top court bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna had also directed the state government to provide her accommodation at a place of her choice, after noting that she had been living a nomadic life since 2002.

“Feel lucky that we are not observing anything against your government in the order”, CJI Gogoi had told Hemantika Wahi, standing counsel of Gujarat.

The riots survivor had approached the apex court seeking exemplary compensation and disciplinary proceedings against the police officials who were convicted by the Bombay High Court in the case. She had earlier refused to accept the offer of Rs 5 lakh made by the state government.

During the riots across Gujarat in Feb-March 2002 following Godhra train carnage, over 1000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed and unspecific number of women were gang-raped.
