NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 20— The Delhi Police has denied permission to Bhim Army and its chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad to take out a protest march on Friday from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

On Tuesday, Aazad had announced that he would take out a protest march from the historic Jama Masjid. However, in view of the Thursday protest by other groups, the police had clamped CrPC section 144 in the Red Fort area which is still operational. Jama Masjid is near Red Fort.

In view of the Friday namaz today, the police have clarified that there would be no restrictions on people coming to Jama Masjid to offer namaz.

Despite police denying him permission for the march, Bhim Army chief announced on Twitter around 11:40 AM today that he would reach Jama Masjid and take out the march. He also trashed the reports that he has been arrested by the police.

“Please don’t believe rumour about my arrest. I am reaching Jama Masjid,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Meanwhile, in view of the protest call, the Delhi Metro has announced a short while ago that entry and exit gates of Chawri Bazar, Lal Quila and Jama Masjid have been closed and trains will not be halting at these stations.

On Thursday, thousands of people including students, activists and academicians had hit the streets in the national capital protesting against the controversial law and police crackdown on students of Jamia Millia and Aligarh Muslim University.

Along with several hundred common people, eminent persons including D Raja, Sitaram Yechury, Nilotpal Basu, Brinda Karat, Ajay Maken, Sandeep Dikshit and activists Yogendra Yadav, John Dayal, Umar Khalid, Harsh Mander and Prashant Bhushan were detained from areas around Red Fort and Mandi House. All were released later.
