Thousands of Women Protest against CAA-NRC-NPR in Jaipur

JAIPUR, JANUARY 18— Thousands of women held a massive protest demonstration against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, National Population Register (NPR) and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the capital city of Rajasthan here on Saturday.

The protesters, both young and old, were holding placards with messages against CAA, NRC and NPR.

Addressing the mammoth gathering, Jamia Millia Islamia student and leader of the on-going youth movement Aysha Renna said: “When the current government came to power, they had taken oath on the Constitution of India, not Manusmriti; therefore, they should run the country according to the Constitution.”

Aysha’s images atop a car during anti-CAA protest outside Jamia Millia in Delhi on December 13 and saving a male student from the onslaught of the Delhi Police personnel on December 15 had hit the national and international headlines.

Addressing thousands of women in Jaipur, Ayesha said: “These women have gathered in Jaipur not to create ruckus or chaos but to save the Constitution and our fight will continue until the government withdraws these black laws.”


Convenor of the People’s Movement Against CAA-NRC-NPR, Sawai Singh, in his presidential speech, also said that the movement and protest will continue until these anti-people moves are withdrawn. He demanded the Congress government of Rajasthan to follow Kerala and Punjab to ensure CAA, NPR and NRC will not be implemented in the state.

Addressing the gathering, Rubina Abrar, State Secretary, Women’s Wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said: “These anti-people policies are maligning the image of the country in the world. Women of Jaipur are now awake and will continue fighting till end for the protection of the Constitution.”

Rajasthan University Students Union president Puja Verma said that those who are playing with the Constitution of the country should be taught lesson and her Students Union will support the agitation.

Other speakers included Rukhsana Usman, women head of Association for Protection of Civil Liberties, Aligarh Muslim University student Verda Beg, Nisha Sidhu of NFWI and others.

Eminent personalities present at the event included former chairpersons of Rajasthan Women Commisison Lad Kumari Jain and Pawan Surana, Rajasthan Jamaat-e-Islami Hind president Mohammad Nazimuddin, Hemlata Kansotia of Rajasthan Nagrik Manch and Dalit Muslim Ekta Manch president Abdul Lateef Arco.

Since CAA was passed by the Parliament on December 11, there have been massive nationwide protests against it and government’s move for NPR and NRC.

More than 60 petitions have already been filed against CAA in the Supreme Court which is likely to hear them on January 22.
