NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 1— In yet another incident of hate crime, a young member of human rights group ‘United Against Hate’ (UAH) was thrashed by some unidentified people for wearing an anti-CAA/NRC cap in Delhi Friday night.

“Young member of United Against Hate Mohd Faisal was beaten brutally by 5-6 un identified goons in Rani Garden area of East Delhi. He was asked to remove the No CAA NPR NRC cap. When he refused to do so he was beaten up,” tweeted UAH from its official handle and tagged Delhi Police.

The victim was rushed to the hospital. UAH has lodged complaint with the police.

Commenting on the incident, senior journalist Prashant Tandon said: “Shame on right wing goons who brutally attacked @UAH_India volunteer Mohd Faisal yesterday in Delhi. When BJP leaders openly instigate violence and indulge in hate speech they are creating a lynch-mob and criminals. A clear sign of frustration of a losing battle. #CAA_NRCProtests”

The incident took place just day after a Hindu-right youth opened fire at students of Jamia Millia Islamia when they were peacefully against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and government plans to conduct nationwide exercise for National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). One student of Jamia was injured in hand with the firing.

In the last one week, several leaders of the ruling BJP, including Union Minister Anurag Thakur have made provocative remarks on those protesting against CAA-NRC-NPR. Besides Thakur, BJP MP Parvesh Saheb Singh Verma and Delhi Assembly election candidate Kapil Mishra have been penalized by the Election Commission for their remarks. Complaints have also been filed with Police against them.

Since CAA was passed by the Parliament on Dec 11, there have been nationwide protests against this law which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to only Hindi, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain and Parsi migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
