PUDUCHERRY, FEBRUARY 13— The Puducherry Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Congress leader and Chief Minister of the union territory V Narayanasamy tabled the resolution and amidst boycott by opposition, the one-day special session of the Assembly adopted the resolution.

Before Puducherry, six state Assemblies have passed similar resolution against CAA. They are: Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Except Kerala and West Bengal, other five have Congress government.

The Puducherry Assembly also registered strong protest against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

Members of the opposition AINRC and AIADMK boycotted the session while the three BJP legislators staged a walkout.

After the passage of the resolution, a delegation of Muslim organizations met Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and thanked him.

CAA, passed by Parliament on December 11, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Jains and Parsis who came from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to India till December 31, 2014. The law has excluded Muslims.

Since the law was passed, there have been massive nationwide protests against CAA-NRC-NPR.
