Delhi Violence Death Toll Reaches 53; Police Files 654 FIRs, Detain 1820 People

NEW DELHI, MARCH 05— The death toll in the three-day long massive violence in the northeast Delhi last month reached 53 on Thursday. Hundreds of injured persons are under treatment at hospitals. The violence had started on Feb 23 and continued till Feb 25.

As per media reports, the GTB hospital has confirmed 44 deaths, 5 deaths were confirmed at RML hospital, 3 at Lok Nayak hospital and 1 at Jag Pravesh hospital.

The Police have filed 654 FIRs so far.

The police have detained 1820 people so far in connection with the violence that majorly affected areas like Maujpur, Jafrabad, Shiv Vihar, Mustafabad and Brijpuri.

Besides the physical losses, hundreds of homes, shops, offices and several hundred vehicles were torched during the violence which had started as clashes between pro- and anti-CAA protesters hours after BJP leader Kapil Mishra’s ultimatum to the police to clear the roads from the anti-CAA protests within three days.

Petitions seeking registration of FIRs against Mishra and some other BJP leaders for their provocative statements during the recent Delhi Assembly elections are pending in the Delhi High Court.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain was arrested by the Police in connection with the murder of IB officer Ankit Sharma during the violence.
