Self-Appointed Vigilantes Continue To Attack Muslim Meat Suppliers, Livestock Traders In Haryana’s Gurugram

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 14—Self-appointed vigilantes continue to target Muslim meat suppliers and livestock traders in various parts of Gurugram and nearby districts thanks to inadequate response of the police to the crimes against Muslims.

Two incidents of attacks on meat suppliers and livestock dealers have been reported in the last two weeks itself in Gurugram district, with police registering FIRs in one case simply on statements of the accused, not the victims.

While one incident took place in Khatola village, another incident happened in Gurugram city.

Another incident took place a few months back in a residential colony in Gurgaon in which Muslim family members were beaten up by sticks inside their home. Following that barbaric incident, a number of Muslims had left Gurugram for Muslim-dominated area.

Four Hindu youths from Khatola village called Mursaleen and Nasir, residents of Ghasera village for selling their buffaloes. They had been calling for three-four days. Mursaleen and Nasir visited Khatola on Wednesday (August 12) where they were beaten up mercilessly. They are livestock traders.

Nasir sustained serious injuries and is under treatment in a private hospital in Gurgaon.

Police arrested Dilbagh and Adesh on charges of attacking Nasir and Mursaleen. Two other unknown accused are absconding. Police are avoiding to disclose names of the absconders.

Haji Shahzad, a relative of Mursaleen and leader of Muslim Ekta Manch, said, “Enough is enough. We plan to protest near Gurgaon police commissioner office in a large number tomorrow against the mob attacks of Muslim youths.”

Shahzad said, “Police are trying to hush-up the case. The FIR was registered on the statements given by the accused. Statements of Mursaleen and Nasir were not registered. Instead, police got them signed on a plane paper.”

The police are trying to make it a case of fighting between two groups. When the victims reached the given address for the animals, they were told that animals had gone to forest. They were taken to the forest where four accused – Dilbagh, Adesh and two unidentified Hindu youths of Khatola – attacked them with sticks.

When victims asked the reason for their beating, the accused allegedly replied, “Go and register a case. You are here to be beaten up”, said Haji Shahzad.

Luckily some others from Khatola village happened to reache the jungle and saved the victims and took them to police station. “For two hours police did nothing. Blood was gushing out from injuries. When Muslims protested against the lacklustre attitude of the police, the victims were admitted to Gurugram Civil hospital. The police forcibly secured signatures of victims on plane papers in hospital. The police registered the FIR on the basis of statements of the accused, not the victims. The accused told the police that they fought over some financial issue”, Shahzad said.

When doctors on duty saw their deteriorating health condition, they referred the victims to Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital. But a day after, family members of Mursaleen and Nasir got them discharged from Safdarjung hospital and admitted them to a private hospital in Gurugram.

Denying the allegations, PRO Gurugram police, Subhash Gokan, said that Mursaleen and Nasir went to buy buffaloes. While finalizing the prices, some heated argument took place that resulted into a clash between the two sides. The police registered a case against the accused and arrested Dilbagh and Adesh.

In the second incident, one Lukman Khan of Ghasera village in Nuh was mercilessly beaten by cow vigilantes in Gurgaon on the eve of Bakrid. He was carrying buffalo meat in his pickup truck from his Ghasera village to a meat shop owner in Gurgaon’s Jama Masjid area.

However, he was cornered by the vigilantes at a traffic signal. But Lukman managed to escape and entered the Jama Masjid area with his truck. But the miscreants intercepted and caught hold of him. They beat him badly and then took the truck to Badshahpur area of Gurgaon city where they pulled him down the truck and were beating mercilessly when a police party happened to see this incident. The police intervened and saved him. The accused persons attacked the police party also.

Lukman was taken to a hospital and the police filed a complaint against “unidentified individuals” though all attackers are seen clearly in the video.

The video of the incident recorded by witnesses shows the faces of the assailants. One of them, Pradeep Yadav, was arrested. “We have identified more people,” Gurgaon’s Additional Commissioner of Police Pritpal Singh said.
