NEW DELHI—In a stunning performance, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimin (AIMIM) headed by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi won five assembly seats in Seemanchal region of Bihar, out of 24 seats from where it fielded its candidates.

The seats that have been captured by AIMIM are Amour, Kochadhaman, Baisi, Bahadurganj and Jokihat. This has surprised political analysts who had so far been sarcastically describing AIMIM as “vote katua party”, cutting into the vote banks of the secular political parties outside Telangana. But its performance in Bihar polls has proved that it is a serious political party as many analysts say that AIMIM received support from electorates belonging to Hindu community, particularly of Dalits and backwards, as well.

AIMIM winner from Amour seat is Akhtarul Iman who polled 71016 votes, by defeating his nearest rival Saba Zafar of Janata Dal (United) who secured 30292 votes and Congress party’s Abdul Jalil Mastan who managed to get 14802 votes.

Muhammed Izhar Asfi, AIMIM candidate from Kochadhaman, polled 68,194 votes (52 per cent of the total polled votes) by trouncing his nearest rival Mujahid Alam of JDU and Mohammed Shahid Alam of RJD who secured 35978 and 16111 votes, respectively.

Syed Ruknuddin Ahmed, AIMIM candidate from Baisi, polled 67370 votes which is 38 per cent of the total polled votes. He defeated his nearest political rivals Vinod Kumar of BJP having secured 51793 votes and Abdus Subhan of RJD who obtained 37628 votes.

In Bahadurganj, Mohammad Anzar Nayeemi of AIMIM polled 47235 votes or 46.45 per cent of the total polled votes, against his rivals, Lakhan Lal Pandit of Vikassheel Insaf Party (VIP) securing 30735 votes and Congress party’s Mohammad Tauseef Alam getting 13185 votes.

From Jokihat seat, Shahnawaz of AIMIM defeated Ranjit Yadav of BJP and Sarfaraz Alam of RJD by securing 59523 (34.33 per cent) votes. While Ranjit Yadav got 48892 votes, Sarfaraz Alam polled 51980 votes in a neck-to-neck contest.

AIMIM had fought this assembly election in alliance with Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samata Party, Bahujan Samaj Party of Mayawati and former Union Minister Devendra Prasad Yadav’s Samajwadi Janata Dal(Democratic).

AIMIM had earlier contested 2015 assembly elections as well in Bihar but had drawn a blank. However, it made its presence felt in political waters of Bihar by winning Kishanganj assembly by-poll in 2019. Its candidate from Kishanganj Lok Sabha seat also polled more than three lakh votes in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Political analysts say that AIMIM candidates also got the votes of Hindu electorates, mostly from the Dalit and backward communities.

AIMIM’s win on five seats in Bihar is a great achievement of Owaisi as he had been trying for the last few years to increase the footprint of his party in North India.
