NEW DELHI—Strongly condemning the raid by the Delhi Police (Special Cell) at the office of Adv Mehmood Pracha on Thursday, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has said that “the raid appears to be an act of vengeance and intimidation” as “Adv Pracha has been fighting cases for many victims of the Northeast Delhi riots and those unjustly arrested for their role in anti-CAA protests”.

Stating that “there is a visible pattern in the recent arrests by the Delhi Police”, JIH Vice President Prof Salim Engineer said, “It appears as if the police want to send a message that those who take up cudgels on behalf of victims of injustice and police high-handedness, will have to face inquiries, raids and arrest.”

Expressing concern over the “raid-culture” by the government agencies, JIH Vice President alleged, “The government is misusing various agencies to intimidate those who oppose its policies and actions”.

Pointing out that “the Constitution has enjoined the law-enforcement agencies and government institutions to be independent and free from executive control”, he said that the recent events, however, show that these constitutional norms were being disregarded. Many senior lawyers have condemned the raid and called it a violation of the rule of law.

Engineer Salim hoped that all justice-loving people would condemn the raid on Adv Pracha and the police would refrain from further arbitrary harassment.
