NEW DELHI— Look who is hitting out at the Modi-led government at the Centre!

Dr. Parakala Prabhakar, the husband of union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has hit out at the central government for being “numb, insensitive and heartless” towards the colossal tragedy that is unfolding due to the second wave of COVID 19.

“Prime Minister’s popularity and communication skills seem to indemnify the incompetence and heartlessness of this government. They could ride out the anger of the visuals of migrant laborers because of numbing. But popularity and political capital have a habit of running out without giving notice. Numbing will not last forever. Compassion, transparency, empathy will last. PM should exercise his choice at least for now,” he said in his weekly Blog `Midweek matters’ on YouTube.

Dr. Prabhakar said the country is witnessing one of the largest surges of COVID in the world. “Death toll is mounting. By the end of Monday, the official number of infected cases was 2.59 lakh. The death toll was 1761. A cumulative number of cases stand at 1 crore 563 lakhs 14 thousand and 714. In just two weeks, India has added 15 lakh new cases,” he said.

He said that the country is underreporting the actual number of deaths and cases (because of obvious reasons). “Deaths are underreported. Cases too are underreported. Doctors tell us that situation is grave. Testing too has broken down. Hospitals and lab capacities are overwhelmed. Footage of ambulances with patients outside hospitals, dozens of bodies being burnt at crematoriums, scores of stretchers doubling up as hospital beds and relatives wailing are choking our social media timelines,” he said.

Hitting out at political and religious leaders for being “unmindful of this agony”, he said it is elections and religious resurrection that matters for them, not the public health or people’s lives.

“For political leaders, elections are important. For religious leaders, renaissance of religious identity is important. Public health or people’s lives matter little for them. Our television channels show people being mobilized for rallies. PM, union ministers, CMs, opposition leaders, and dense gathering of people at Kumb Mela. After the damage is done, religious leaders said Mela hereafter will be symbolic. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi announced the cancelation of rallies. TMC and BJP continue rallies with flagrant violation of COVID protocols,” he said.

Dr. Prabhakar lashed out at those who justified rallies and Kumb Mela. “It is disgusting to hear. They often say our rate of infection is less. They resort to heartless country comparisons and selective comparisons. Even cross-country comparisons of are flawed. We are much higher than Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. This is something we need to ponder about,” he said.

He said to fight COVID, they need to vaccinate 70 percent of people excluding pregnant women and children. “That means we need to vaccinate 70 crore people. We need 140 crore doses of vaccination. It is clear that we are not prepared. Vaccination is slowing down. The uncivil and ill-tempered response by the union health minister to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is out of depth,” he said.

Dr. Prabhakar said the government has squandered the lockdown period. “Lockdowns are not the solution but means to pause the virus until vaccine and medical infrastructure is available,” he said.

  1. Completely agree with your analysis and statement which reflects the feeling of majority of our population. The godi media is afraid to open its mouth. Thankyou for setting the ball rolling to bring out the real facts.

  2. You have spoken reality. No dispute on that. Elections and Kumb mela seem to be more important than Covid. But why opposition is keeping quiet? For them if not Kumb mela, election was important to them also

  3. Dr Parakala Prabhakar is candid and fearless in his analysis of the callousness and theatrics of this Government. I salute him!

  4. Dr.Prabakar has shown the mirror to this insensitive, heartless government.i salute his courage and integrity.

  5. I fully agree with You. Govt.is not at all serious about mankind & itself floating & allowing to float / violate the rules, thereby fast spreading of disease.

  6. Finally someone showed some spine… you may not have 55 inch chest but you certainly showed that u have a strong spine.. hope the population doesn’t forget all these when they vote

  7. Yes Prabhakar, you’re right on the mark. Great that despite your inherent limitations, you’ve mustered the courage to spell out the truth in all its naked glory. Hopefully your message is heeded.

  8. You are echoing the sentiments of every thinking Indian..
Present government missed a huge opportunity…
Let them and Us ( not America but we) not remain frozen… Keep politics aside and work to salvage the situation

  9. Sir , i am also a husband ..I can feel your pain . if your wife is FM and she is better economist than you … and everyday people say she is better .. you are bound to get insulted and feel humiliated.. work hard and prove to be better than FM . PM Modi will not take you in BJP . So talk to FM … Or you consider retirement sir … it’s best solution. Good luck to you sir.

    • Sir, from your own words, you sound like a person who would feel insulted and insecure if his wife becomes popular or appreciated. Please don’t advise others because your attitude stinks and you are not in the same boat as Dr. Parakala Prabhakar. FYI, I am a husband too. Thanks.

    • Wow when you have no points to counter what he has said, you take out the “ultimate weapon of bhakts”, his personal life. Like another guy has pointed out, it would be worthwhile to consider his arguments and retrospect your ideologies. Thank you

  10. Gone through thrice the video received in what sup. Superbly connecting worded and bold and truthful exposure of our present government, doesn’t matter if family member is also responsible for it. You felt disgusting with the situation, same as all others (except bhakts) but wonders if you ever tried to correct Troll Minister Cum Finance Minister at Home. Beware sir these crook duos may attempt to attack you in Media from home only as we have seen in Yashwant Sinha case that Son is sent out to brickbat with dad for creating non existent perception.

  11. My hearty thanks to P.Prabhakar as a great intellectual to speak the truth what may hit and embraces his wife who is Cabinet Minister of heartless PM Modi’s govt .

  12. This is truth . It seems the GoI is at backseat of disaster Management and states are confronted with political agonies. Focus should be to strengthen medical infrastructure but states seem to be apathetic and doing politics.

  13. If u r so much disappointed with the handling of Covid by the govt, why don’t u ask ur wife to resign from the govt. Charity should begin at home. Govt is doing whatever is possible and situation is within managable levels except for opposition ruled states which accounts for 70% of total Covid cases. U have not criticized maharastra, delhi, punjab and kerla CM’s for deliberate mishandling and bringing a bad name to central govt. Even advanced nations like US have found themselves helpless in this pandemic crisis. India is a developing country with huge population and no govt whatsoever will be able to tackle the crisis of such a huge magnitude with 100% accuracy. Even i don’t agree with the govt on many policy matters but that doesn’t mean i will criticize just for the sake of criticsm. U should have spoken about inept handling of the situation by opposition ruled states wherein injections and oxygen cylinders were sold in black market. The law and order machinary seems to be on vaccation in these corrupt states. Thank ur stars that there is a caring PM at the helm otherwise the country would have gone to dogs.

    • Manageable? seriously.
India is in deep shit…. we are burning people everywhere.
you sound like a die hard bjp… which is ok. But don’t be so blinded.

    • Very right, things went out of control for various reasons, as citizens we too started partying, hosting lavish weddings etc without a care, collective failure, but things are turning around with all possible steps taken by the Central govt. in aiding the states, foreign help coming in, is all due to P.M’s stature, so let’s stand united in this hour of grief, Great U.S of A is not doing any better, so let’s not let down our gaurd by fuelling negativity.

    • Oh how conveniently you have forgotten the past few months. The entire nation was reeling due to total lack of action or planning from the government. And when people looked for an answer PM was busy thinking of rebuilding his palace. If the states ruled by opposition are still suffering from COVID, it is not the individual failure of states alone, rather of the centre as well. And about vaccination, I think you had conveniently left out the fact that the idea of vaccination itself only stemmed up near late December- early January when many countries had already started vaccinating after completing trials. when the entire country was in a dire situation in the second wave, the centre was adamant that it would not give free vaccines to its citizens and left the states on their own to deal with the SII directly( who were not ready to deal initially with states individually due to the pact made with the Centre). All this inaction and total lack of responsibility was too much to handle that the Supreme Court had to intervene in matters like oxygen unavailability, vaccine shortage and ensuring free vaccines to individuals. What more shame to the government? Show your allegiance to BJP or whatever political party you represent, but please don’t hide realities that the country witnessed-kumb mela being held just when cases were rising, people crying out on the roads for lack of beds, doctors pleading for oxygen and bodies being burnt in numbers. All this could have been prevented if the Centre had taken steps early to ensure vaccination at the earliest and anticipate and ensure beds and oxygen early enough. We had to pay a heavy price for the time during the second wave, so don’t justify citing the present situation.

  14. Totally endorse what Dr.Prabharkar’s thoughts . The Govt has failed its people .Thoroughly disillusioned and disappointed of the present state of affairs . Such incompetence topped by the callous attitude is simply shameful ! Leadership of the lowest order .

  15. Aspirations about the government’s role in crisis are too huge. Actually the public insensitivity and unabashed distrust in the administrative system is too deep, deeper than Covid era. Whatever physical or intellectual resources we have are barely enough to put barrages to hold the ocean of 139 crore. Elections, kumbhs, id milans are too essential luxuries for the populace, more precious than industry, exploration and invention.
Thus we get what we deserve: poverty, crowd, emaciation and bleak future. Govt. Is us.

  16. Dr. Prabhakar with due respect for your words… Isn’t it is ones responsibility to take atmost care of themselves rather blaming govt.. Despite the fact that Covid-19 2nd wave is going to hit worse….which we seen in other places… Let the people take their decision to stay foot and help themselves rather getting into this bitter virus..

  17. Am fully in agreement with what Mr P.Prabhakar has said about the Pandemic situation and inept handling of the same by the Present Establishment. THEY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONVERT THE CHALLENGE INTO AN OPPORTUNITY, BUT ALAS THEY HAVE SPILLED IT .

  18. Yes, so true. Majority of indians feel the same, but are scared to say a word. The sufferings are huge. Now they say they are procuring equipments and essentials from other countries. But the definitely helped in spreading of the virus by calling people to rallies and kumbh.

  19. Very right, things went out of control for various reasons, as citizens we too started partying, hosting lavish weddings etc without a care, collective failure, but things are turning around with all possible steps taken by the Central govt. in aiding the states, foreign help coming in, is all due to P.M’s stature, so let’s stand united in this hour of grief, Great U.S of A is not doing any better, so let’s not let down our guard by fuelling negativity.

  20. Midi wanted to defeat Didi. He is hiding his pale face behind his long white beard. He frittered away the gap between two waves. While he was giving useless speeches the FM was offering psbs and puss for sale. Without waiting for the next election the president should act and dismiss Midi and his cabinet jokers. A national government should be formed

  21. Thank you Dr Prabhakar for having the courage to voice your views. And you are bang on. Government’s reaction, and I say reaction with responsibility, is like that of a headless chicken. Truly, one year wasted. The country could have been better equipped to fight the second wave. Alas, they were equipping themselves to fighting elections…not the pandemic. As for the stature of the PM, all succour us coming because of pressure from the Indian diaspora, pressure from Indian doctors and local media. If someone wishes to take credit, let them. It will be used to gain brownie points.

  22. You have spoken the truth. There is no help for suffering people and Senior Citizens from this Government. Only story telling.

  23. Mr. Modi is a Person of Deepest Inferiority Complex Close to Hitler. A Person with that Kind of Complex Considers Himself Absolutely Worthless and His Only Survival Rescue Is Others’ Praise. He Will Do Everything Superlative Just To Prove to Himself That He is Not an Idiot. Bullet Train, Statue of Unity, Demonetization, GST (Just To Keep All Financial Powers at the Center), Scripted Interview at Albert Hall, Rallying for Trump, Naming the World’s Biggest Stadium After Self.

He Gives the Masses a Feel That He is The Only Super Power and Savior. He Gives Masses a Feel That They are Superior and He Will Lead Them to Prove That. So He Creates a Rift in the Nation Between People Whom He Wants to Prove as Superiors and The People from Whom They Have a Threat (Look at Hitler !)

But By the Time People Realise This Stupidity , The Ir-repairable Damage is Done, People Themselves Have Taken The Nation to Dogs !

I Salute Dr. Prabhakar for His Tremendous Courage.. He Has Now To Fight On Both Fronts : National and Domestic. I Wish He Succeeds on Both the Fronts; So The Nation is Saved and His Family Also.

  24. This article merely focuses on accusations, right or wrong. It doesn’t talk of providing advise or guidance for some implementation under the current situation from the respectable senior economist. So, what is the intent? Sad.

If one cares for the country and is a capable person, along with the issues, solutions must be brought forward. This one dimensional venting can only be with an agenda and not with an objectivity to solve the problems of the nation.

I am not even commenting on what is right or wrong, but what is being presented and not presented and how it is being presented.

    • @ Sai Madhavan :You Say : It doesn’t talk of providing advise or guidance for some implementation under the current situation from the respectable senior economist.

The Message is Clear Mr Modi is a Total Failure and Needs to be Immediately Replaced By Another Sensible and Responsible BJP Leader Like Nitin Gadkari.
