NEW DELHI—Two persons were killed in police firing in Dholpur town of Darrang district when they were protesting against their eviction by the district administration, reports reaching here said.

As many as 800 persons were evicted four days ago as a part of the state government’s drive against “illegal encroachments.”

But there was no resistance from the people on that day. People peacefully removed their belongings from their houses.

However, trouble began on Thursday when the police went to the Sipajhar area for the eviction of others. People offered resistance and there took place a clash between the two sides.

According to reports, about 10,000 persons protested against their eviction by police.

Almost all the affected persons happen to be Muslims.

Violence erupted in Dholpur in the Darrang district of Assam this afternoon as two civilians were killed while several have been injured in a police firing during a protest against eviction drive at Dhalpur.

At least 800 families, occupying about 4,500 bighas of land Darrang were evicted as part of the state government’s drive against “illegal encroachments” on Monday.

Families exhibited no resistance that day, instead of relocating their belongings.

Continuing the eviction process, the Assam government today went for eviction in Dhalpur are of Sipajhar where they met with severe protest from the locals over the eviction which led to a clash between the police and the locals.

According to sources, over 10,000 encroachers were protesting at the no 3 areas against the eviction drive.
