NEW DELHI— Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s Markazi Taleemi Board (Central Education Board) has appealed to the central government to immediately resolve the issue of Indian students studying in Ukraine.
In a media statement, chairman of the JIH Markazi Taleemi Board Mr. Mujtaba Farooq today said, “The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than a month now. Because of the war, various sectors in Ukraine have been badly affected. One of them is the education. In Ukraine, a large number of Indian students were also pursuing medical education and other courses. Among them are students from the first year till the final year. An estimated 25,000 Indian students were studying in various universities in Ukraine. Most of them were medical students who were studying in private colleges there. The future of these students is in extreme jeopardy because of the collapse of the education system in Ukraine due to the prolonged war”.
Mr. Farooq further said, “Medical education requires classroom lectures, as also laboratory practicals, and hands-on experience in dealing with patients in hospitals, which is not yet possible for these students who have returned from Ukraine. In addition, it is difficult to predict when the situation in Ukraine will return to normal. The precious year of thousands of students should not be wasted.”
Asking the Government to form a committee to find a solution to this problem immediately, the JIH Education Board’s chairman suggested that those students might be enrolled into various government colleges in India or the students might take online classes from their Ukrainian teachers and be allowed to do practical in various medical colleges of India.
Mr Farooq drew the attention of the Government towards an important point that the affected students gave feedback that Ukrainian professors were not exhibiting a friendly and cordial attitude towards Indian students because of India’s reluctance in giving unconditional and full support to Ukraine. “Although the issue is part of Indian foreign policy, it should not affect the education of students, but unfortunately, the Ukrainian staff appears to be influenced by this issue and it is affecting our students. The Minister of Education definitely understands the pain of Indian students and their parents. The Markazi Taleemi Board, in particular, urges the Union Minister of Education to take immediate action on this issue. In the long run, it is important to make medical education easier and less expensive, so that Indian students can study in their own country instead of going abroad. Not only that, but also foreign students can get the medical education in our country,” he added.
