NEW DELHI—All India Muslim personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has appealed to Muslim ulema and intellectuals not to participate in those TV debates whose intention is “to make mockery and insult Islam and Muslims.” The board comprising all schools of Islamic thought in India works to protect Muslim personal laws.

The reason advanced by the ulema and Muslim intellectuals for their participation was that they served Islam and Muslims by participating in debates.

But the board, in a statement, said that “Instead, they (ulema and intellectuals) become reason for their own direct insult by involving Islam and Muslims.”

“The intention of these programmes is not to reach any conclusion through constructive discourse but to ridicule and defame Islam and Muslims,” said the statement.

“To gather some legitimacy, these TV channels need Muslim faces in their debates. Due to their obliviousness, our Islamic scholars (ulema) and intellectuals become victims of such agenda,” the board pointed out.

“If we boycott such programmes and channels, not only it will affect their TRP negatively, but they will also fail in achieving their objective through these debates,” the statement said.

The statement was signed by AIMPLB president Maulana Syed Mohammad Rabey Hasani Nadwi, general secretary Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, vice-presidents Syed Jalaluddin Umari, Maulana Kaka Sayeed Oomeri, Maulana Syed Shah Fakhruddin Ashraf,  Maulana Syed Arshad Madani and Prof. Dr Syed Ali Mohammad Naqvi.
