Jammu—A top Lashkar-e-Toiba militant has turned out to be a former BJP leader.

Talib Hussain Shah was among two heavily armed militants caught by the villagers and handed over to the police in the Reasi district. The other militant has been arrested as Faizal Ahmed Dar.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was quick to announce a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to the villagers.

“I salute the bravery of villagers of Tukson Dhok, Reasi, who apprehended two most wanted terrorists. Such determination by the common men shows the end of terrorism is not far away. UT Government to extend Rs 5 lakh cash reward to villagers for the gallant act against terrorists and terrorism,” Sinha said.

Director-General of Police (DGP) too announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for villagers.

Hours after, social media was flooded with pictures of Talib with state BJP leaders. Congress took the BJP to task for allegedly having militants in their ranks.

“BJP should explain how the dreaded terrorists have been enjoying its patronage by getting important assignments in the party,” said J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Ghulam Ahmed Mir in a statement.

“The main culprit in the sensational Udaipur murder incident, also is the active member of the ruling BJP and now the arrest and identification of LET commander of Peer Panjal range Talib Hussain as a senior office-bearer of BJP is a matter of great concern,” added JKPCC.

Congress also questioned BJP for not only giving entry to such anti-national and anti-social elements but assigning them important positions in the party posing threat to the security of the country. “The party owes an explanation to the nation and the countrymen for such an irresponsible conduct being ruling party having easy access to intelligence inputs about the credentials of such anti-national elements,” the party said.

Under fire, BJP spokesman RS Pathania told NDTV:  “I’d say this is a new model — entering the BJP, gaining access, doing recce… there was even a plot to kill the top leadership busted by the police.”

According to the report, the BJP appointed Talib Minority Morcha’s IT and social media in-charge in Jammu province on May 9. “Talib Hussain Shah, at Draj Kotranka, Budhan, District Rajouri, shall be the new IT & Social Media In-charge BJP Minority Mocha Jammu Province with immediate effect,” read an order issued by the BJP Minority Morcha.

Later in the evening, BJP Kashmir, shared a clipping claiming that Talib had resigned from the post on May 27. “Now I have nothing to do with any political party. Please accept this letter as my resignation from this post,” read the clipping.
