NEW DELHI–Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who has been disqualified as MLA after being convicted for hate speech, returned to the political stage after a long gap and asked the assembled crowd in Rampur whether they want him and his kin killed like former Allahabad MP Atiq Ahmad and his brother.

Khan , a former minister, made the comments while he was campaigning for Samajwadi Party candidate Fatima Zabi who is contesting for mayoral post of Rampur municipality.

Khan, who was convicted for making allegations against administrative officials of Rampur district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, vehemently criticised Central and State BJP governments and called his political opponents as “political eunuchs”.

According to reports, Khan was worried as he feared that even some Muslims in Rampur may vote for the BJP. He asked them what they wanted him to do for them so that they could vote for the SP candidate. “What do you want from me and my children? Do you want someone to come and shoot us in the head? That’s all that is left… Save Nizam-e-Hind, save the law, you don’t have to offer anything, you just have to encourage yourself. Sit wherever you get stopped and try to move forward instead of stepping back,” ANI quoted Khan having said.

Khan said that Rampus is one of the most significant political seats of the country and finds mention even in the speech of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Vazir-e-Azam (Prime Minister) of India has mentioned your Rampur assembly seat in a Hindustan of 150 crore people. This is your status. There is so much fear of you, and this fear is not of any caste, nor of my being a minister, nor of my being an MP or MLA, but it’s the fear of our unity and the trust we share. Whatever happened, whether I remain a member of the Legislative Assembly or not, a person who’s in his young age, his legislature was abolished twice, mine and Abdullah’s (his son) right to vote were abolished,” he said.

The polling for UP civic polls will be held on May 4.
