NEW DELHI–Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has welcomed the Supreme Court judgment on hate speech.

In a statement to the media, JIH Vice-President Prof Salim Engineer said, “We welcome the apex court judgment by Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna on hate speech.”

Stating that “some people are deliberately using hate speech to serve their political agenda to divide the country and garner votes,” the JIH leader said that “such people are causing great damage to the communal harmony of the country.”

“In light of the inability of law enforcement authorities to clamp down on hate speeches, the judgment by the Supreme Court of India holds great significance,” he observed .

“Jamaat concurs with the Supreme Court of India that hate speech is a serious offense that affects the secular fabric of the country,” Prof Salim pointed out.

He said, “The judgment correctly rules that any hesitation to act in accordance with the court order will be viewed as contempt of court and action will be taken against erring officers. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind hopes that going forward, the states would suo motu register FIRs on hate speech incidents and proceed against offenders without waiting for someone to lodge a complaint. If the judgment is implemented in letter and spirit, the country can get rid of the menace of hate speech.”
