NEW DELHI—Jamaat-e-Islami Hind vice-presidentMalik Moatasim Khan has condemned the cold-blooded and targeted shooting of three citizens belonging to the Muslim community and an assistant sub-inspector(ASI) of Railway Protection Force (RPF) on a running train by an RPF constable on Monday morning.

In a statement to the media, Mr Khan said that the incident appeared to be a hate crime as the accused hunted out passengers who resembled Muslims and shot them in cold-blood.

The JIH leader pointed out that this heinous incident was another chapter in the continuous chain of organized violence against Muslims and seemed to have become a new normal in the country.

“The radicalisation and polarization coming from the upper echelons of our power centres has resulted in this sorry state of affairs,” Mr Khan remarked.

JIH vice-president said, “It seems that identifying the perpetrators of hate crimes especially those against Muslims as mentally unstable and psychic has become the standard operating procedure to ward off any allegations of radicalization against a particular community. We are able to see through this fabricated hoax.”

Mr. Khan wondered how these “mentally ill” and “short-tempered” individuals were armed with guns and entrusted with the safety and security of rail passengers.

Reports about the accused praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and  UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after the killing are extremely troubling and damaging.

“The climate of hatred in the country that has been created through the policies of exclusion, majoritarianism, division, hate, and polarization exacerbated by a pliant media, jingoistic films, literature, and books, is leading to such incidents,” the senior JIH leader said.

Stating that hate-mongering by media is at the root of the problem, Mr Khan advised media to observe restraint.

Mr Khan demanded RPF should compensate the families of the victims and offer suitable employment to their kith and kin. JIH also demanded an independent high-level judicial enquiry into this incident and the punishment to the guilty.
