NEW DELHI—Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) president Syed Sadatullah Hussaini has said that the Supreme Court ruling on Article 370 is “unfortunate and disappointing.”

In a statement to the media, the JIH President said, “We are extremely disappointed by the decision of the Supreme Court to uphold the scrapping of Article 370. The aspirations of the people of Kashmir have been hurt and betrayed. It is quite disappointing to see the apex court putting its seal of approval on a decision by the government that goes against the basic principles of parliamentary democracy. Article 370, which awarded special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was abrogated suddenly and unilaterally through a Presidential order without consulting the people and their representatives. The fundamental rights of the people of the state were violated through this decision. Federalism has been seriously compromised. With this Supreme Court judgment in its defense, the Union government can now pick any city of India and convert it into a Union territory. Will this be good for democracy and the federal structure of our Union?”

The JIH leader said, “The government must immediately restore statehood and conduct free and fair elections before the deadline set by the Supreme Court. The government must sincerely comply with the SC demand for setting up an “impartial Truth and Reconciliation committee to investigate and report on the violations of human rights both by the State and non-state actors at least since the 1980s and recommend measures for reconciliation.”

Jamaat would like to reiterate its long-standing position that the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir must be resolved by talks, consultation, and dialogue with the people of the state and their representatives.”
