Nationwide protests against hike in rail fares

New Delhi, 22 June 2014: To oppose the decision of the Narendra Modi government for a steep hike in rail fares, protests were held across the country. Protestors demanded the central government to withdraw the hike. The government on Friday raised the railway passenger fares by 14.2 percent in all classes and freight charges by 6.5 percent. The new fares and freight rates will come into effect from June 25.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Saturday staged a protest in Delhi and Gurgaon against the central government’s decision to hike rail fares. The demonstrators chanted slogans against the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded an immediate rollback.

Various political parties organised separate protests in Odisha against the rail fare hike.

Congress workers, led by the chief of the party’s Delhi unit Arvinder Singh Lovely, protested in Delhi against the Modi government’s decision to hike rail fares.

Hundreds of Samajwadi Party (SP) cadres and supporters took to the streets across Uttar Pradesh to protest the central governmen’’s decision to hike rail fares.

Reminding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of its promise of ‘good days’, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh Saturday said ‘good days are proving to be worse’.

Communist Party of India also organised a protest against the hike.

Protestors blocked railway traffic in different parts of the country.
