New Delhi, 21 Sep 2014: Cutting across party lines, several political leaders on Sunday put their weight behind the demand for changes in the country’s electoral system to ensure representation of all.

In spite of lots of virtues in our electoral system, it is unable to ensure representation of all sections of the society, said AB Bardhan, General Secretary of Communist Party of India. In the present system, people with money and muscle power want to win at any cost. Unless the fundamental changes take place in the electoral system, representation of all sections is not possible, said the veteran politician while speaking at a national convention on Proportional Representation organized by Welfare Party of India here in the National Capital on Sunday.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav said he considers proportional representation as a better option but first we should do changes in the prevailing system. He also expressed apprehension that a proportional system may promote family control and dictatorship. If our all efforts fail then we should think about alternative system, he said.

In his keynote address, Dr SQR Ilyas, General Secretary of Welfare Party of India said the current FPTP electoral system has failed in giving representation to various castes, religious groups and regions. As for representation and inclusiveness, this system has failed. He called for a third system based on the good features of the present FPTP aspects of taking cues from both proportional and FPTP system.

Other top leaders of Welfare Party including President Mujtaba Farooque and Vice President Dr. Zafarul Islam Khan were also present on the occasion.
