Jamshedpur, Oct 12: In the wake of rise in incidents of human rights violation in Jharkhand, a civil rights body has launched a campaign to make people aware about human rights, rules of detention and arrest and criminal justice system and process.

As part of the campaign, Jamshedpur chapter of Association For Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) organized a daylong workshop for concerned citizens and human rights activists.

APCR’s national coordinator Adv. Abubakr Sabbaq, who practices law at Delhi High Court, addressed the gathering and informed them about the human rights protected by the Constitution and rules about detention and arrest formulated by the Supreme Court.

Eminent RTI activist and journalist Afroz Alam Sahil talked about the role and responsibility of media in protection of human rights. He said RTI is the biggest weapon in the hand of citizens. He also said that people should have faith in the criminal justice system of the country and people should be made aware of the laws.

The event was also addressed by Waquasur Rehman, Jamshedpur convenor of APCR.

Talking about the need of such campaign and workshop, Mohammad Kashif Raza Siddiqui, a member of APCR told IndiaTomorrow.net: “In the last 3-4 years, there has been a rise in incidents of human rights violation in Jamshedpur and other parts of Jharkhand. Police picked youths and kept in detention for days and released only after public pressure. The illegal detentions have created a fear in the society.”

“There has been a rise in human rights violations since the new govt came to power. The latest is the custodial death of a youth in Jamtara district. He was picked one week ago,” informed Kashif.

According to The Indian Express, Minhaj Ansari, 22, was arrested a week ago for allegedly sharing an objectionable comment about beef on WhatsApp in Jamtara district. He died at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi on Sunday.
