IndiaTomorrow.net,
Lucknow, March 15: Since the results of UP Assembly elections were announced on Saturday, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has been raising doubts over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) being fool-proof. BSP, besides Samajwadi Party and Congress, was almost routed by BJP in the election.

Mayawati has demanded fresh elections in UP alleging rigging of EVMs. Today she announced to observe 11th of every month as ‘Black Day’ as a mark of protest. On 11th March, UP Assembly election results were declared. BJP bagged 312 seats while BSP on 19.

To substantiate its suspicion about EVMs, BSP on Wednesday claimed that on Hapur Assembly seat, more votes were counted on EVMs on counting day than the votes polled and announced by the Election Commission on voting day.

It said that Hapur seat has 2,96,679 voters. Some 2,01,148 (67.8%) votes were cast in Phase 1 on 11 Feb. but the number of votes counted on 11 March is 2,22,655 (75%).

“@ceoup (UP Election Commission) must explain, how & who got this 21,507 votes,” BSP demanded.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday also intensified his attack on EVMs and alleged that EVMs were tampered in Punjab and votes cast in favour of AAP were transferred to Akali Dal.

While addressing a press conference here today, day after the dates for Delhi civil polls were announced, Kejriwal said: “Many said that there is anger against Akali’s & AAP is sweeping polls, still AAP got 25% votes & SAD got 31%, how is it possible?”

“Election Commission’s responsibility to keep people’s faith in EVM. They cannot shirk responsibility,” he further said.

He also demanded the EC to count slips of VVPAT and match it with figures of EVM results. “If it matches, people’s trust will increase.”
