New Delhi, Dec 16: At least 251 journalists were jailed around the world in 2018 – this was third year in a row when more than 250 journalists were jailed in retaliation to their work. This suggests that “the authoritarian approach to critical news coverage is more than a temporary spike,” said Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in its annual global survey.

“The past three years have recorded the highest number of jailed journalists since CPJ began keeping track, with consecutive records set in 2016 and 2017. Turkey, China, and Egypt were responsible for more than half of those jailed around the world for the third year in a row,” CPJ said.

In 2016, some 259 journalists were jailed across the world, and in 2017 that number rose to 262.
