NEW DELHI, MARCH 14 – Protesting organisations against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), NRC and NPR such as ‘We the people of India’ and ‘Alliances against CAA-NRC-NPR’, held a joint press conference at the Press Club of India, New Delhi in which written clarification was sought from the Home Minister on the assurances given on NPR in Parliament.
It may be known that Home Minister Amit Shah said in a statement given in Parliament on Thursday that no document will be sought in NPR. In the press conference, all the organizations `demanded that Amit Shah should give this assurance in writing. The banner of the program was also, “Write it down”.
Yogendra Yadav, human rights activist Harsh Mander, Mujtaba Farooq of Alliance Against CAA, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind President Saadatullah Hussaini, Maulana Tauqeer Raza, Jamiat Ulama Hind’s Niyaz Farooqi, Adv Parvez of Jamiat Ahle Hadis also spoke at the press conference.
Addressing the media, Yogendra Yadav said, “We need the statement of the Home Minister in writing, that is, this statement should be legalized and it should be ensured that no citizen will be dismissed.”
Yogendra Yadav said, “The NPR law in 2003 has talked about doubtful citizen, so the Home Minister should clarify what is the legal validity of his statement?” If we get a clarification legally, we will cooperate in the NPR process or else the protest will continue. ”
Human rights activist Harsh Mander said, “Until the government does not say legally, it is difficult to believe because the verbal assurance of the Home Minister is not enough.”
Saadatullah Hussaini, president of Jama’at Islami Hind appealed to the people across the country to boycott NPR if the ambiguities around are not cleared. ”
The Jamaat chief said, “We welcome the statement of the Home Minister given in Parliament but these statements are not enough.” We demand that the Home Minister should amend the law. If the rules are changed and delinked from the NRC, then we have no problem with the NPR. ”
Maulana Tauqir Raza said, ” I request the Home Minister to bring his statement in the legal process so that the matter can be clarified.”
Niyaz Farooqui of Jamiat Ulama Hind said, “Muslims across the country are upset and in a state of confusion over NPR. The government should fulfil its duty and the Home Minister should make it clear that no citizen will be declared as dutiful. ”
