NOIDA(Uttar Pradesh)—Congress leader Rahul and his sister Priynka Gandhi, who were not allowed by the Uttar Pradesh police and administration to visit the family members of a 19-year-old Dalit woman murdered and allegedly gangraped, were, however, allowed to go to Hathras on Saturday afternoon.
This was his second attempt to go to Hathras. During the first attempt on October 1, he was prevented by the police in Greater Noida. Rahul had alleged that police lathicharged him and pushed him, to the ground on October 1 though the allegations were denied by the UP police.
However, the UP police allowed him on Saturday.
Accompanied by over 30 Congress leaders, including several MP like Shashi Tharoor, Rahul Gandhi reached Noida by crossing the DND bridge over river Yamuna at around 2.30 pm, with more than 10,000 Congress workers waiting to receive him and join his cavalcade.
While Rahul Gandhi was sitting in the front seat of an Innova, it was driver by his sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi.
Rahul told mediapersons, “Nothing can stop me from going to Harthras and meet the family of Dalit woman murdered and allegedly subjected to rape”.
Priyanka said that if they were not allowed today, they would try again some other day.
Thousands of Congress workers who had assembled there also wanted to join the caravan of Rahul Gandhi and drive to Hathras. But they were stopped by the police.
Only Rahyul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and a few MPs with him were allowed in two vehicles.
The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse Congress workers when they did not disperse. Some Congress workers are reported to have been injured in the lathicharge.
A huge security had been deployed at the DND bridge and on the rest of the road up to Toll Point to clear the road from Congress workers and prevent them from accompanying Rahul Gandhi.
