LUCKNOW/KOLKATA—Claiming that he has been placed under “house arrest”, UP Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu has said that there was “anarchy”in the state.

Speaking to mediapersons on Saturday, he said that police had placed him under “house arrest”because his party has organised statewide protest against the gangrape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Harthra district.

Stating that Yogi Adityanath government has crossed “all limits of anarchy, UP Congress chief said that police came to his home at 1.30. “When I asked them why are they at my place at this odd hour, they said a case has been registered against and I have to appear at the Hazratganj police station on October 9”.

“At 4 am, I was told that I am under house arrest”, the Congress leader said.

He said that it was all done to prevent him from taking part in the protest to seek justice for the Dalit victim and her family. “What does the UP government want to hide by keeping me under house arrest? “, he asked.

The Congress leader said that the Yogi government was scared and that was why it was preventing political leaders and human rights activists from visiting the family of the murdered Dalit woman.

“Dictatorship in India”: Mamta Banerjee

Launcing an scathing attack on the BJP-led Central government on Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the government at the Centre was “running a dictatorship” in the country. She compared BJP with a “pandemic” which is oppressing the Dalits the most.

She made the comments while leading a protest march against the Hathras gangrape and murder incident.
