NEW DELHI—A Delhi court has refused bail to former JNU research scholar Umar Khalid in a larger conspiracy case in the Northeast Delhi riots case in February 2020, reports Live Law.

He was booked on charges under various sections of the Indian penal Code and UAPA. He was arrested on September 13, 2020.

However, the detailed order about why the bail was denied is yet to be given.

The police in its chargesheet filed in the FIR 59/2020 had alleged that Umar Khalid was the chief conspirator of the Delhi riot. However, his advocate Trideep Pais argued in the court that the charges are fabricated and based on video clips of Republic TV and News 18 with truncated version of his speech.

Pais told the court that the Delhi police did not have anything against Umar Khalid except the videos of Republic TV and CNN-News 18. The advocate alleged that News 18 had deleted Khalid’s statements regarding the need for unity and harmony.
