NEW DELHI—The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to accept urgent listing of petitions challenging a verdict of the Karnataka High court upholding a ban on the wearing of hijab in classrooms, reports Live Law.

The ban was imposed by the state government and the Karnataka High Court upheld it saying that Hijab is not an essential and integral part of Islam.

A first year Pre-University student Aisha Shifat had moved the Supreme Court, challenging the high court verdict.

Senior advocate Devdatt Kamat requested the CJI for urgent hearing of the case, saying that examinations were going on and the matter needed to be heard on an urgent basis.

However, the CJI said that examinations have nothing to do with the case. When Kamat insisted that examinations were to begin on March 28 and girls were being prevented to take the exams with scarf, the CJI did not respond and instead, asked for the next item on the list before his court.
